We’re thrilled to welcome Inder Dhillon to the Bleach. PR family after her highly successful official debut as part of the East Sydney TAFE Innovators parade at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia last month.

Below is the official lookbook and press release for the ‘Pretty Tomboy’ collection as well as some footage from the MBFWA showcase.

Inder Dhillon – ‘Pretty Tomboy’

Inder Dhillon debuted ‘Pretty Tomboy’ at the INNOVATORS show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia last month. Having already won awards for her graduate collection and evening wear at Sydney’s esteemed East Sydney TAFE, in addition to having garments featured in Vogue Italia online in April 2013, Inder Dhillon’s collection was much anticipated and did not disappoint.

The 30-piece collection is an extension of the inspiration behind the graduate collection referencing the traditional embellishments and jewellery of Northern India and transporting the intricacy and precision of their age-old tribal techniques into modern western designs.

“I wanted to take the preconceived perception of overtly embellished Indian techniques and translate it into something that women can wear everyday, something more subtle yet still visually striking.” Inder says of the collection.

Inder worked closely with artisans in India to create unique embellishments. Inder recalls the experience was, “astounding, the speed and efficiency in which they were able to apply such painstaking detail to a garment is something I will never forget. Their skills have been handed down from generation to generation, spanning decades and in some cases centuries, it’s a side of fashion that deserves to be recognized and valued by everyone. ‘Pretty Tomboy’ makes the decadence of these amazing hand sewn embellishments accessible and wearable, it’s about taking an element usually reserved for more formal occasions and making it a statement wardrobe staple.”

The detail combined with Inder’s contemporary casual cuts and thoroughly modern fabrics make for a collection that is as relaxed as it is elaborate.  The depth and detail of the collection extends beyond the immediately noticeable embellishments of sequins and beading to more subtle elements such as metallic ribbon woven through textured silks to create allover motifs and add an extra dimension of texture.

Colours range from neutrals through to deep purple, mulberry and striking silvers on a luxurious base of fabrics including leather, linens, lycra crepe de chine and various silks.

‘Pretty Tomboy’ is a rich collection of fluidly tailored separates merged with more structural silhouettes such as bodices, fitted wrap skirts and peplum shorts, whilst the dresses in the collection infuse an extra element of edgy elegance with their feminine silhouettes and ornate embellishments.

Inder says, “The vibe is luxury meets street and I used the phrase ‘pretty tomboy’ to encapsulate my customer who likes to dress up, but in her own way.”

‘Pretty Tomboy,’ affirms that Inder’s distinct design aesthetic has more than just promise; it’s got power.

Having already been named ‘Student Of The Year’ with the prize of exhibiting at the Powerhouse Museum representing the Fashion Design Studio (exhibition runs till October 7th 2013), in addition to taking home first place in the ‘Strand Arcade Evening Wear’ competition all in her third and final year of TAFE, Inder is now set to receive the prestigious CreateIT Industry Award for outstanding achievement in her field of study in June. The awards affirm not only Inder’s originality, but also her technical finesse and ability to innovate through her designs.

‘Pretty Tomboy,” marks the next steps for the Inder Dhillon brand and solidifies the fact that it’s on its way to some very exciting places.
