Phoenix Keating In Fashion Weekly

Phoenix Keating was recently interviewed for Fashion Weekly’s UpClose section.

Take a look at the complete interview…

Phoenix Keating Upclose

Phoenix Keating is an amazing Sydney based label headed by designer Phoenix Keating who has won over admirers like Lady Gaga. Having designed his latest SS12 collection we couldn’t help but ask what is it that inspires Keating to design and create pieces that are so unique and somewhat shocking. Here is what he had to say.

What was the inspiration behind your latest collection?

I was looking at Belgian housewives around the time of the 1700’s and I began to see the foundations of modern fetish wear subtly worked into their outfits and I was inspired to create a collection that took fetish back to a less vulgar, less sexual aesthetic. The idea was to intertwine classic elements like chef shirts and 1940’s silhouettes with modern fetish.

What is your ‘signature artistic flair’?

I think my signature look, is taken from an era past. I love a cinched waist and a big shoulder. What I am trying to achieve is a look that is ultra classic versus ultra avant-guard.

What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion is a less abstract version of art. The way I design is via my most passionate of instincts and inspiration. I feel that is how an artist would work. I think there are many parallels to be drawn between the highly creative artists in the art world and those of the fashion industry.

What is one piece of advice would you give to someone wanting to start a career in fashion?

Develop an extremely tough skin and never ever compromise.

What is the best perk in being a designer?

Being a designer is the perk. Making what you think is the ultimate human being come to life. I don’t think of myself as someone who designs clothes, I design people.

Describe yourself in three words.

Excitable, Unyielding, Sensitive.

Who is your biggest style icon?

Alexander McQueen.

Has it been hard to break into the fashion industry?

Of course it has. The fashion industry in Sydney is so small and so guarded that it is hard to do anything let alone speak your true imagination.

What’s next for you?

My next collection (to be released late October) which I am quite proud of, and then Fashion week next year where I will be showing on schedule for the first time.
